Un grupo de expertos botánicos que se reunieron en el X Congreso de Botánica en Colombia  realizado en la ciudad de Florencia, hallaron para el mundo, una nueva especie de orquídea en zona rural de Florencia, en límites con el departamento del Huila.

Mientras realizaban un proceso de matiar y colectar muestras en la ruta de Florencia hacia el Pórtico, Nicolás Gutiérrez Morales quien iba a la cabeza, encontró una Lepanthes muy pequeña sobre un árbol de Cupania scrobiculata.

Luego de evaluar el material entre el conjunto de expertos que hacían parte del grupo confirmaron que se trataba de una nueva especie. Desde ese momento David Hoyos se encargó de colectar más material y motivar al grupo a publicar su descubrimiento lo antes posible.

Los expertos que registraron el hallazgo son: Juan Sebastián Moreno de la Fundación Ecotonos, David Hoyos de la Universidad de la Amazonia, Milton Rincón y María Escalante de la Universidad del Tolima,  Nicolas Gutierrez de la Universidad de Sao Pablo y Mario Sierra Ariza.

Le nueva especie fue dedicada al municipio de Florencia Caquetá, como recuerdo de aquella salida en donde las matas hicieron que coincidieran todos ese día.

Se describe e ilustra una nueva especie de Lepanthes de los Andes Orientales de Colombia. Lepanthes florenciana es más similar a Lepanthes niphas, pero se puede distinguir por los pétalos transversalmente trilobulados con el lóbulo superior e inferior dolabriformes (vs. transversalmente bilobados con los lóbulos estrechamente triangulares), un labio semilunar (vs. semiorbicular) y un apéndice pubescente oblongo (frente a un apículo diminuto en el seno).
